Lassen Peak by Moonlight
July 25-31, 1999
by Elizabeth Schoendaler
We started our trip on
July 25th, Sunday, and parked our cars At the Summit Lake Campground.
After loading up 40 pounds Commissary stuff. The group hiked 5 miles
to our first lake Called Feather Lake, at an elevation of 7, 000
feet. We set up camp.
On Monday, we broke camp and continued on to our next stop, hiking
7 miles to Snag Lake. We arrived about 1:00 pm and again, set up
camp next to a wonderful pristine and cold water lake. Across the
view admired Mt. Hoffman. Arriving early to camp gave us the opportunity
to day-hike to the top of this Mountain. From above we admired our
lake, the harden lava flow and the clear blue sky.
The following day was a layover day at the same lake. We did a second
day-hike up to Cinder Cone. On our ascent towards The top of the
cone, we explored its outer rim. Some of us ventured down To the
center of the cone. It was spectacular. After the much easier descent
On soft dark ash surface, we headed back to our base-camp.
Wednesday was the longest day. We returned back to our startingtrailhead
at Summit Lake Campground where we camped by noon. By 6:00 pm after
setting in, we drove to Lassen Peak trailhead and did an evening
hike to the summit, just in time to see The sun set and the full
moon rise. The moon was bright as the snow illunated the Summit.
It was beautiful and memorable experience. We returned to the trailhead
And back to our campground by 1:00 am.
Thursday and Friday, we turned towards a different climate and scenery
Heading south. We hiked 4 miles to Corral campground and camped
by a busy Creek with great views. We explored eastward for miles
to Kings Creek Waterfalls With lots of cascades.
Saturday, we hiked back to Summit Lake Campground concluding our
week-long trip. This was a memorable adventure atg our Lassen to
Moonlight trip.
